before I left the Paris Opera Ballet, there were many principal male roles in the classical repertory that I couldn't see myself in. most men in ballet are mistake-makers, aggressors and - if we are completely honest - total douches whose sole purpose is to be made sorry for their wrong-doings. I didn't see myself reflected in that type of masculinity. now I have enough baggage with me to realize that mistakes are for everyone to make and those mistakes can change us as people. they can make us miserable and angry and vengeful, they can make us sorry, but there's strength to rising above those feelings and this is something to which the male role in ballet is also a testament.
